In both cases she sort of collapses in on herself (the second being a more extreme example of this), and, more significantly, clutches at her bag strap. It’s not surprising that Ema has the more dramatic movement here: in general, she is much more animated than her sister.Īnother very clear instance of this can be found, for example, when looking at Ema’s upset poses. Lana’s is set over her heart, while Ema’s cover her mouth. The main difference between these two poses, of course, is where they position their hands. Moving back again to Ema’s parallels with her sister, we can see another very clear one: their expressions of surprise She acts smug and all-knowing, while at the same time closing herself off from what she dreads most: being told, yet again, that she’s wrong. I don’t think it’s much of a leap to say that Ema worries, worries a great deal, about being wrong about something, or making a fool out of herself. However, this is also a girl who has been told on multiple occasions that she wasn’t good enough to get the job she wanted most. Perhaps she simply is feeling superior, and closing herself off to those she deems less cleverly scientific. She may be putting of a sense of smugness and confidence, but there is a underlying sense of discomfort. She has her arms crossed in front of her, and her head is turned away more drastically than the younger Ema’s, making it closer to the angle of Lana’s animation. However, her body language, as well as echoing Lana’s distressed pose, is compeletly closed off. Lana’s stress, and in turn, her nervous habit of clutching her elbow is probably so familiar to Ema that it was easy for her to copy the movement without fully understanding or even noticing the worry behind it.Īpollo Justice era Ema also mimics her sister’s pose, though in a slightly different manner, and again, portraying a different emotion.įor the older Ema, it seems to be more an expression of smugness. Lana worries a great deal about her sister, about her job, and about the events of the SL-9 incident. This means that Lana spends enough time stressed or tense that Ema was able to pick up on her posturing without necessarily associating it with any extreme emotion. Ema, on the other hand, is perhaps concerned, but more thoughtful than anything. The strange thing about this, however, is the fact that while physically they are very similar, these two gestures are very emotionally different. And out of these, the first that pops out is Lana’s tendency to grab her elbow when she is distressed

The most obvious place to look for parallels to Ema’s gestures, would be, of course, in her sister.
